AISD to Discuss Closing Barton Hills and Zilker Elementary

As a Zilker neighborhood resident, I subscribe to our neighborhood news group and recently came upon some disheartening news.
According to sources in the newsgroup, Zilker Elementary and Barton Hills Elementary are at risk for being closed. Fox News is reporting that Zilker and Barton Hills may be closed, and students could be rolled over to Becker and Dawson Elementary Schools.
Posted on the “Keep Zilker Elementary School Open“ Facebook page is, “From an email from the Zilker PTA: ‘The AISD Facility Master Plan Task Force is charged with reviewing options for all AISD facilities. One of the options the task force is taking to the Community Meetings on January 12 and 13 is to close Zilker and Barton Hills.” Here is a link to the meeting minutes discussing the scenarios for various school closings and their projected cost savings to the district. As you can see on Page 9 of the link above, the Task Force has reported that the largest Capital Cost Avoidance comes from closing both Zilker and Barton Hills Elementary Schools and moving all students into Becker and Dawson.
Although I don’t have children in the schools yet, this news saddens and shocks me. Both schools earned ‘Exemplary’ ratings in 2010 and are important structures of our community. According to a study on Austin schools from mid-2010, approximately 524 kids go to Zilker, and 347 go to Barton Hills. Many families will be affected by this – even ones who do not have children in these schools (think property values!).
This is the preliminary stages of the discussions surrounding how to overcome the AISD budget deficits, but we wanted our viewership to be aware of these issues. What Makes South Central Austin Special

There are many great reasons why South Central Austin is such an attractive place to own real estate. Take the Southwood neighborhood for example. Southwood neighborhood located in South Central Austin has a laid back, funky and eclectic feel within six miles of downtown Austin. Close to bus lines, major shopping, local parks, and Austin Community College.
South Austin Homes
The homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1950’s and the 1960’s and many have been restored. The neighborhood is a mixture of old and a few new homes. Some of the homes have studios built in back for rentals, music studios workshop’s and art workshops.
A Sense of Community in South Austin
The community has a currently strong neighborhood association that is very active in preserving its character and has various groups to connect with on topics from raised bed gardens, preserving local parks and trails and finding great services for different topics.

Barton Place Condos Nearing Completion!

The parking lots are now open for Billy’s BBQ and Austin Java in South Austin, as the finishing touches are being put on the Barton Place condominiums.
Construction of the Barton Place has made it somewhat tricky for patrons of Billy’s BBQ and Austin Java to enjoy the local fare, but now that parking has been restored, it’s time to get back down to Barton Springs Road and spend an afternoon or evening at the local establishments.
Taylor Estates in South Austin

Taylor Estates is a new community of homes in South Austin. We made a trip to the Sales Office over there earlier to check on a contract we have pending for a buyer, and snapped a quick pic of the front entrance. For those of you who haven’t been by to check out Taylor Estates, it’s a really nice community of Gehan Homes. Taylor Estates is just east of Manchaca on Davis.

What is Colorado Crossing?
Colorado Crossing is a quiet community of homes conveniently located in South East Austin. It provides close access to Hwy 183 and Hwy 71 and is just minutes from McKinney Falls State Park & Richard Moya Park and is only ten minutes from Downtown Austin.
Colorado Crossing has a home owners association and many amenities. There are two playgrounds and parks, a soccer field and a proposed pond being built in the south part of the community. A community swimming pool is scheduled to be built next year.

People are seen riding bikes, walking their dogs and kids playing in the park. Colorado Crossing is a great place live!
